Working in the AEC sector—the architecture, engineering, and construction industries—you may have heard about two essential software programs: Revit and AutoCAD. You may even currently use these industry-standard applications extensively in your work.
What Is AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is computer-aided design (CAD) software designed for industry use by architecture, project management, engineering, and urban design professionals. AutoCAD allows the creation and modification of 2D and 3D geometric models and is most used for drafting purposes. Consider it a digital version of the architect’s drafting table. Currently, AutoCAD offers various specialized auxiliary tools covering every industrial field related to 2D design and 3D modeling.
What Is Revit?
Revit is a building information modeling (BIM) software used for intelligent 3D geometric modeling. BIM software, including Revit, is used within the AEC industry to manage, construct, and plan buildings and infrastructure. Revit can create models of houses, buildings, landscape designs, and so on. Both AutoCAD and Revit have extensive developers’ networks that CTC Software is proud to be a part of; we have been developing and making tools for both programs for over a decade.
Differences Between Revit and AutoCAD
While Revit and AutoCAD are owned by the same company (Autodesk), and many industry professionals use these software programs in tandem to increase productivity and ROI, there are some key differences between the two.
AutoCAD is a CAD software used primarily for drafting, while Revit is BIM software for 3D modeling, design, and documentation. AutoCAD draws lines only, whereas with Revit, you design using accurately modeled components such as walls, roofs, doors, windows, columns, HVAC components, and other structural features. Additionally, with Revit, you can build more accurate designs representative of the actual building or system much more easily than is possible with AutoCAD.
These differences do not mean the two programs compete, though. Many AEC firms have dedicated AutoCAD specialists as well as dedicated Revit specialists who work together on the same project.
